Large Hand-Painted Stilton Stand Pedestal This large pedestalled dish was probably used for cheese, though it would be perfect as a large cake pedestal as well. It measures 12 inches wide by 3 inches tall

The hand-painted design is known as Persian Rose. All colors are quite deep: red, green and blue. The pearlware glaze is quite blue and irregular, evidence of its early potting.

Condition is very good. There is a small chip on the foot rim as pictured. Glaze is somewhat irregular as is often found with early pieces.

22043

Ridgway Lavender Purple Transferware 7 1/2 Inch Plate, NAPIER, c. 1846 - 50 Presented is an impressive Staffordshire 7 1/2 inch plate in a chinoiserie design entitled Napier. Two potteries produced this pattern, J&G Alcock and J. Ridgway during the 1846 - 50 period. This one was made in the Ridgway pottery.

It is in excellent condition, free of all flaws. Note is great rim design which consists of dramatic scalloping and geometric design bordering. When plates ae displayed, unusual rim shapes add an interesting dimension.

The subject matter is also charming. It looks like the early Oriental interpretation of a children's play date. In the foreground a mother holds her child's hand as a servant shades both with a parasol. They stand at the bank of a river as the mother looks at another woman who approaches. The second woman holds her child's hand as a servant shades them with a parasol. They sit in a Chinese junk. Other aspects of the design are pagodas, a willow tree design, and more geometric patterning. Its backstamp includes pattern name and pottery initials.

The design is named for British Major General Sir Charles Napier who was the conquerer of Scinde in India, a province in Pakistan.

10091

T. Mayer Two Color Transferware Staffordshire Plate, CANOVA, Black & Purple This gorgeous black and purple transferware 9 1/4 inch plate was made in the Thomas Mayer pottery which operated from 1826 to 1835. We love several aspects.

We love the irregularly scalloped rim. The tight scallops appear over the floral areas on the surround. These areas alternate with scenic river views each with a sailboat and classic urn. The scallops stretch on these areas to emphasize the scene. The surround is done in purple transfer.

We love the bi-color design. The scene in the center done in black features a large classic urn in a garden setting.

The design, Canova, is purported to honor an Italian artist by the pattern name who was cremated; hence the urn.

The back is marked with pattern name and pottery. Condition is excellent: no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restorations.

9120

Aesthetic Black Transferware Staffordshire Plate, Star Pattern in Purple, Black, Yellow Lustre Here is a great black transfer aesthetic plate in a star pattern. It measures 10 1/2 inches wide and is made of heavy ironstone with crazing that actually adds to the design rather than detracting from it.

The artist who added purple embellishments and yellow lustre to this black transfer design was quite skilled and extremely patient as judged by the accuracy of the additions. It is quite beautiful.

This plate bears the number of the artist plus some imprinted markings, one of which is a 1 over 64, which probably indicates that it was made during January of 1864.

Though it is transfered in black, its look emphasizes the purple. It would look great as part of a purple transferware collection. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, or stains.

9070

Rare Davenport Three Color Transferware Plate, MULETEER We are pleased to offer a rare tri-color transferware large plate in the Muleteer pattern. It was made in the Staffordshire pottery of Davenport and dates to 1836.

One seldom finds transfer designs in three colors. Usually, added coloration is done by hand-painting or clobbering. This is not clobbered. The colors are all done by transfer. One can see this by viewing the close-up pictures. Note the dotting.

The main transfer color is blue, which is used for the surround as well as for the water and mountains in the scene. The land and figures are done in black transfer. Green is used for the trees, grass, and other foliates.

This distinctive plate is quite large, measuring 10 1/4 inches wide and is in excellent condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations.
It bears the pottery's transfer backstamp and imprinted anchor mark.

The Muleteer design features a figure leading a pack mule down a path beside a waterfall. Behind are mountains and buildings with high towers. The surround has foliates, birds in flight and flowers on a stippled ground.
