Dark Blue Staffordshire Historical Transferware Plate, St. Paul School, London, Here is a dark blue transferware plate measuring just shy of 8 inches in diameter. It was made in the William Adams pottery during 1804 - 29. It bears their American Eagle backstamp with pattern name and the pottery's imprinted stamp, too.

It is in good shape: no chips or cracks but some utensil scratching as pictured.

This scene is one of the pottery's Regents Park Series.

1000062

CJ Mason Bi-Color Transferware Staffordshire Plate, Basket, c. 1845 - 8, Blue & Black I can't gush enough about the beauty of this plate. The pattern, Basket, consists of a central floral basket in black transfer against white. It is framed within a circle of blue scrolling followed by a lavish band of blue stippling with bleck and white flowers. Toward the rim is a band of black transfer along a dimensionally beaded rim which is also bordered in white. Adding yet another dimension is the sculptured design of the rim. Wow!

It measure 9 inches in diameter unless one measures point to point on the rim decoration. Then, it measures 9 1/2 inches wide. It is in very good antique condition. The only issue to mention are two little flakes on the back side of two of the points on the edge. I have included natural light pictures of this plate and close-ups of the tiny flakes.

This plate bears a transferware stamp from its potter, Charles James Mason & Co., whose pottery operated from 1845 to 1848. I believe, however, that a mistake was made by the person who transfered the design. It is marked "Persian" when the pattern is actually "Basket." Those doing the transfering were usually illiterate women and children, so one can understand how this might happen.

Four of these plates are listed separately.

It measure 9 inches in diameter unless one measures point to point on the rim decoration. Then, it measures 9 1/2 inches wide.

The only condition issues to mention is a little bit of rubbing to the very tips of three of the edge points, mentioned for accuracy. There are also two chips to the underside foot ring, which would only be seen if the plate was upended.

For some reason, this plate is hard to photograph well. For this one, I took the pictures outside by natural light. I want the viewer to be able to see the detail.

100058

Large Staffordshire Blue Transferware Plate, BOLOGNA, W. Adams & Sons, c. 1830 We love this romantic pattern, Bologna. Here is a large blue transfer plate, 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It was made in the William Adams and Sons pottery which operated from 1830 - 40.

Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration. Glaze is very shiny. It's a gorgeous plate, large enough to display prominently.

With transferware, the term romantic implies subject matter that is both exotic and fanciful. In addition to the usual meaning, the Bologna series adds aspects of romantic love. Each scene involves some aspect of courting. Here we see the arrival - or departure - of the couple. A gondola stands at the ready as figures converse.

Alcock White Ironstone Staffordshire Soup Ladle, c. 1860s Here is a medium sized white ironstone Staffordshire soup or toddy ladle. It measures 4 inches across the bowl. The handle is 9 inches long.

The top of the handle has a pleasing paddle shape that would blend with any white ironstone design.

It is free of all chips and cracks. There are some glaze irregularities on the handle that are not considered damage but do mar its looks a bit. Because of this, the price has been adjusted. At the time of this listing, we also have a larger ladle of this exact design in excellent condition. It is offered separately.

100055

Very Deep Adams White Ironstone Punch Ladle, c. 1950 We usually don't carry items from the 1950s; however, we will offer this one because of its deep bowl. It would be a nice choice for a large punchbowl. It bears the Adams mark which dates it to the 1950 period.

The bowl is 4 1/3 inches wide and 2 inches deep. The handle is 12 inches long. This item has a very tight hairline on the side of the bowl, one inch long and hard to find.

Given its flaw and more recent period of potting, we are offering it at an attractive price.

Staffordshire Polychrome Syrup Pitcher, Putti Motif Here is a tall Staffordshire syrup pitcher, 8 1/2 inches. It once had an attached pewter lid - no longer.

The design, done in black transfer, has yellow lustre and dark red embellishments on the putti who are engaged in play - eating grapes, playing with a bird and ring, operating a bow and arrow - cupid style, and handing out together with a dove.

There is a little glazed-over crack at the top of the piece and some loss of the red enamel.

The design is quite whimsical and fun. This pitcher is unmarked. We date it by its look, feel, and subject matter.

1200046

Staffordshire Early Blue Transferware Plate, CHINESE PAGODA AND BRIDGE, Damaged The Staffordshire plate presented measures 10 1/2 inches wide. It has a highly and regularly scalloped rim with a white gadrooned border. The pattern, Chinese Pagoda and Bridge, has been known and is collected, but the potter has not been identified. By its characteristics, we would date it to the 1815 to 40 period.

Condition is poor. It has a crack that extends from the edge to the center of the plate, rendering it unstable and suitable for display only. It looks very good from the front. We hope that someone wants this early one regardless of its condition, so we are offering it at a very low price.
Most interesting is the color of this plate, which does not fit easily into one of my categories. It is red but could be considered an orangy brown or rust. The wall behind this plate is a clear red, so the viewer can accurately gauge the plate's hue.

The oriental scene features a pagoda and a gnarled tree. The white embossed border makes a frame for the scene. It is marked with pattern name.

J. & W. Ridgway Dark Blue Transferware Pedestalled Bowl, INDIA TEMPLE, c. 1814-30 This distinctive dark blue transferware bowl measures 10 inches wide by 4 inches tall. Note the lovely embossed border in white and dark blue handles. The scene features Asian images - pagodas, junks, foliates and florals among other elements.

It has no chips or cracks. The blue handles may have had some work at some time. I say this because they feel a little different from the rest of the piece and evince a bit of blistering. It's still gorgeous, and because of my concern about possible restoration, I am pricing it right.

Elsmore & Forster White Ironstone Staffordshire Vegetable Server, PORTLAND SHAPE, c. 1860 Here is a white ironstone vegetable server in a shape that is hard to find in white ironstone without lustre embellishment. This is Portland Shape. It is a beautiful piece with a remarkable finial in a trumpet blossom shape.

It measures 12 inches long by 6 1/2 inches tall. The potter is Elsmore and Forster. This shape was registered at some time between 1855 and 1865.

This one, beautiful as it is, has a flaw - a 2 inch area on the outer part of the base rim that is rough and has been painted. I suspect there was a chip there that was filled and painted. This in no way could be considered a true restoration. This piece is worth having professionally restored, especially since it is a single chip that does no affect the integrity of the vessel. There are no other chips, cracks, hairlines, or stains.

Pankhurst White Ironstone Staffordshire Basin, Water Bowl, FULL RIBBED SHAPE, c. 1855 This large white ironstone water basin measures 14 inches wide by 4 3/4 inches tall. Usually, this bowl is paired with a ribbed water pitcher, but we are offering only the bowl here. We do have a dresser pitcher in this pattern listed separately.

This bowl looks better than it is. The only chip to mention is a small flake on the edge of the underside. See the picture. Appearance wise, that is about it; however, if one wets the bowl, two hairlines appear, rendering it inappropriate for use. 1200029

J. Ridgway Large Staffordshire Blue Transferware Plate, NAPIER, c. 1846 - 50, As Is Presented is an impressive Staffordshire 9 inch blue transferware plate in a chinoiserie design entitled Napier. Two potteries produced this pattern, J&G Alcock and J. Ridgway during the 1846 - 50 period. This one was made in the Ridgway pottery.

It has a y-shaped crack that renders this beautiful plate appropriate for wall display but not for use or extensive handling. The flaws are visible from the back but blend with the elaborate transferware pattern, so display is very attractive.

Note is great rim design which consists of dramatic scalloping and geometric design bordering. When plates are displayed, unusual rim shapes add an interesting dimension.

The subject matter is also charming. It looks like the early Oriental interpretation of a children's play date. In the foreground a mother holds her child's hand as a servant shades both with a parasol. They stand at the bank of a river as the mother looks at another woman who approaches. The second woman holds her child's hand as a servant shades them with a parasol. They sit in a Chinese junk. Other aspects of the design are pagodas, a willow tree design, and more geometric patterning. Its backstamp includes pattern name and pottery initials.

The design is named for British Major General Sir Charles Napier who was the conqueror of Scinde a province in India.

J. & R. Riley Early Blue Transferware Reticulated Platter, GIRL MUSICIAN, c.1802 - 28 Reticulated platters are becoming exceedingly hard to find. Here is an early one, made in the pottery of John and Richard Riley. They ran two potteries: Nile Street from 1802 to 1814, and Hill Works from 1814 to 1828. This piece is unmarked. It is very finely potted with pearlware glaze evident.

It measures 9 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches and is almost perfect - something one seldom sees in item close to 200 years old. One of the loops at the top has a tiny line that cannot be seen from the front but is evident from the back upon close inspection. It is the only flaw. Glaze is shiny.

The pattern which is entitled Girl Musician features two women and one shepherd on the banks of a river before rapids. A manor appears on the far bank, and cattle graze in the foreground - lovely!

Tall White Ironstone Staffordshire Pitcher, FUCHSIA Shape, c. 1860 This lovely and highly embossed pitcher is done in Fuchsia Shape, a floral and foliate design. It has four areas. From under the handle, foliates drape the vessel with curving stems of fuchsia blossoms winding around the lower part of the pitcher. The same occurs at the top under the handle. A third emerges from the bottom below the spout. The spout area itself has a large draped foliate. It's gorgeous.

This ewer was once paired with a basin, but we don't have it. The pitcher measures 12 inches tall. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks or other flaws. It's the nice white color of wares from its period.

Stevenson & Williams Dark Blue Transferware Saucer, Beehive & Vases, c. 1825 Presented is a lovely and early dark blue transfer deep sipping saucer measuring 5 1/2 inches wide by 1 inch deep. The center is very flat so the vase-and-flower image against a stippled ground displays beautifully. The surround has flowers and scrolls.

I am presenting one saucer here, but I have three in fine shape to sell. One bears a "Stone China" mark. This was a common backstamp on early wares. It does not specify a particular potter. I believe this is the produce of the Stevenson and Williams pottery; however, it might be another of the early potters. Each saucer bears an imprinted H. Each is finely potted with pearlware glaze evident.

I have a fourth saucer with a hairline which does not interfere with display. If someone buys all three of the saucers that are in excellent condition, I will throw in the fourth one free. The last image shows all of them together.

Large White Ironstone Vegetable Server, MEMNON SHAPE, J. Speaking of dramatic, the oversized rose finial with embossed bud and leaf designs beneath certainly fills the bill. This is Memnon Shape.

This vessel was made in the pottery of John Meir and Son whose pottery operated in Tunstall. It dates to 1857. Both a black transfer backstamp and an imprinted mark appear on the bottom of the base.
