Circa: 1845 - 8
Manufacturer: Charles James Mason & Co.

I can't gush enough about the beauty of this plate. The pattern, Basket, consists of a central floral basket in black transfer against white. It is framed within a circle of blue scrolling followed by a lavish band of blue stippling with bleck and white flowers. Toward the rim is a band of black transfer along a dimensionally beaded rim which is also bordered in white. Adding yet another dimension is the sculptured design of the rim. Wow!

It measure 9 inches in diameter unless one measures point to point on the rim decoration. Then, it measures 9 1/2 inches wide. It is in great shape, free of chips and cracks. The glaze is entirely shiny. Upon very close examination of the back side, one can see a small tick to the edge which does not show from the front.

This plate bears a transferware stamp from its potter, Charles James Mason & Co., whose pottery operated from 1845 to 1848. I believe, however, that a mistake was made by the person who transfered the design. It is marked "Persian" when the pattern is actually "Basket." Those doing the transfering were usually illiterate women and children, so one can understand how this might happen. I have four of these beauties. Each will be listed separately because each needs its condition to be described.
