Circa: 1830s Manufacturer: William Adams and Sons, c. 1830 -40
We love this romantic pattern, Bologna. Here is a large blue transfer plate, 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It was made in the William Adams and Sons pottery which operated from 1830 - 40.
Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration. Glaze is very shiny. It's a gorgeous plate, large enough to display prominently.
With transferware, the term romantic implies subject matter that is both exotic and fanciful. In addition to the usual meaning, the Bologna series adds aspects of romantic love. Each scene involves some aspect of courting. Here we see the arrival - or departure - of the couple. A gondola stands at the ready as figures converse. |
