Circa: 1880 Manufacturer: Staffordshire Potter
Here is a tall Staffordshire syrup pitcher, 8 1/2 inches. It once had an attached pewter lid - no longer.
The design, done in black transfer, has yellow lustre and dark red embellishments on the putti who are engaged in play - eating grapes, playing with a bird and ring, operating a bow and arrow - cupid style, and handing out together with a dove.
There is a little glazed-over crack at the top of the piece and some loss of the red enamel.
The design is quite whimsical and fun. This pitcher is unmarked. We date it by its look, feel, and subject matter. |
