Manufacturer: Stevenson
Here is a Staffordshire large purple transfer plate in the prized pattern Millenium pattern, a misspelling of Millennium. It measures 10 1/2 inches wide and bears the pattern name in backstamp cartouche. We have never had a piece of this design that included potter initials or name; however, it is known to have been made in the pottery of Ralph Stevenson and Son, c. 1832 - 35.
The design features elements of the biblical prophesy in Isaiah of a thousand years of peace on earth under the rule of God.
It shows a child with a lion and lamb along with other wild animals at rest together. A figure in prayer is seen with "Give us this day our daily Bread." Above the lion and child flies a dove with "PEACE ON EARTH" below. The center scene is separated from the surround by bold white zigzag patterning. On the surround are images of fruit and grain to denote abundance. At the top is the all-seeing eye of God. Under it, is a bible which is opened to the Isaiah prophesy.
It is plate is done in medium purple with areas in dark shades. The edge is scalloped. Condition is excellent. The glaze is shiny, and transfer is very sharp. It has a tiny ding to the underside foot ring, shown in close-up. |
