Manufacturer: John & Richard Riley, 1802 - 28
Here is a rare treat, a large blue transferware platter in the Dromedary pattern from the pottery of John and Richard Riley. The firm operated from 1802 until 1828.
It measures 18 1/4 inches by just shy of 14 inches. Condition is fabulous - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration. Glaze is also free of utensil scratches. The two white spots you see on the feature picture are a product of the flash.
Many of the wares from this manufactory were not marked. Such is the case with this platter. It bears only an imprinted number 18.
The scene features camel - technically, we should call it a dromedary since it has only one hump - with its handler. In the distance are three pyramids and showy palm trees. The lobed surround has floral and foliate images.
