Manufacturer: Davenport Pottery, Early Staffordshire potter Here is a wonderful and early blue transferware Staffordshire plate.
It was made in the Davenport pottery and dates to 1793 to 1810, a very old piece of transferware. Condition is beyond excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, restorations, or utensil scratching. Glaze is entirely shiny.
The well is completely flat, and the surround is raised, standing 1 1/4 inches. It might be a flat soup plate, or it might be a plate with a particularly high surround. At any rate, it would make a particularly dramatic presentation on a wall because of the dimensional aspect of the surround.
The subject matter involves three figures on a walled deck overlooking a river. A flat, high bridge spans it, connecting a an Oriental building on a high bluff with the other side. The surround has fabulous images which frame the scene grotto style. They include a waterfall, a bluff, fruit, flowers, and foliates.
It is marked with the Davenport imprint and the Davenport anchor. |
