Presented is an early, grotto-style colbalt transferware plate, 8 1/2 inches wide. The potter is Ralph Stevenson whose firm produced wares from 1810 to 1832, making this an early plate indeed.
The oriental pattern shows a grotto view of three figures beside an arched and angular foot bridge. Behind is a pagoda and tropical foliage. Draping willow branches and palm tree fronds frame the scene.
The plate is in excellent condition, free of all chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations. Glaze is extremely shiny and free of utensil scratching. It is marked with the R. Stevenson backstamp. |
