Here is a Staffordshire brown transfer plate in the prized pattern Millenium, a misspelling of Millennium. It measures 9 inches wide and bears the pattern name in backstamp cartouche. We have never had a piece of this design that included potter initials or name; however, it is known to have been made in the pottery of Ralph Stevenson and Son, c. 1832 - 35.
The design features elements of the biblical prophesy in Isaiah of a thousand years of peace on earth under the rule of God. Interestingly, much of the detail of the prophesy is depicted though the word itself, Millennium, was misspelled.
It shows a child with a lion and lamb along with other wild animals at rest together. A figure in prayer is seen with "Give us this day our daily Bread." Above the lion and child flies a dove with "PEACE ON EARTH" below. The center scene is separated from the surround by bold white zigzag patterning. On the surround are images of fruit and grain to denote abundance. At the top is the all-seeing eye of God. Under it, is a bible which is opened to the Isaiah prophesy.
It is plate is done in very dark brown. The edge is scalloped. Condition is excellent. The glaze is shiny, and transfer is very sharp. It had a single chip on the edge which we had professionally restored with perfect results.
