Manufacturer: Staffordshire
Offered in this auction is an early ironstone Staffordshire plate with bordering and paneling on the surround. It has been skillfully painted in light green, red, blue and black. The stems and foliates in black add vividness to this great oak leaf type pattern. One sometimes spongeware elements on plates with hand-painted floral patterns; however, this one is done in brushstroke painting entirely. This pattern is usually referred to as Virginia. Since, however, many firms made such wares, the hand painting varies. In this rendition, the flowers are blue. Usually the image done here is blue is red while the red on this plate is usually done as a green foliate.
The plate measures 9 3/4 inches wide. Condition is excellent. There are no chips or cracks, and almost no scratching. The design has lost none of its vividness or enamel - a super example of mid-nineteenth century hand-painted Staffordshire at its best!!
