Manufacturer: Staffordshire
We are pleased to offer a rare tri-color transferware large plate in the Muleteer pattern. It was made in the Staffordshire pottery of Davenport and dates to 1836.
One seldom finds transfer designs in three colors. Usually, added coloration is done by hand-painting or clobbering. This is not clobbered. The colors are all done by transfer. One can see this by viewing the close-up pictures. Note the dotting.
The main transfer color is blue, which is used for the surround as well as for the water and mountains in the scene. The land and figures are done in black transfer. Green is used for the trees, grass, and other foliates.
This distinctive plate is quite large, measuring 10 1/4 inches wide and is in excellent condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations. It bears the pottery's transfer backstamp and imprinted anchor mark.
The Muleteer design features a figure leading a pack mule down a path beside a waterfall. Behind are mountains and buildings with high towers. The surround has foliates, birds in flight and flowers on a stippled ground.
