Historical Staffordshire transferware dates to the early 1800's. Views depict actual events, buildings, and scenery from around the world. American views are particularly prized in the United States. Many scenes were taken from beautiful engravings of the period and of earlier times. The era came to an end in 1842 when British copyright laws precluded potters from using such material without compensation. Always ready to respond to change, the potters focused then on romanticized views of exotic places and fantasized views on non-existent scenes neither of which called for extra expense to them.
