6052
Staffordshire Purple Transferware Plate, Asian Scenery This lovely plate 10 inches wide, is unmarked. The rim highly scalloped rim is bordered in white and has beading that consists of a line of tiny raised dots. This kind of detail is indicative of early potting, probably 1820 - 35. It is unmarked. This was produced in a quality pottery. The earthenware body is particularly dense, and the transfer design is qite sharp.
The scene depicts Asian images. There is a mosque with a sailboat in the foreground along riverbank. The surround has diapering and floral images. The design has been documented in volumes of early patterns; however, the potter has yet to be identified.
It is in excellent shape, completely free of utensil scratching. On the back, there is one small flake on the rim, its only flaw.

Mayer Purple Transferware Plate, THE GEM The plate presented measures 6 1/2 inches wide, a hard-to-find size. The pattern is The Gem. It was made in the Thomas, John, and Joseph Mayer, 1843 - 55.

The most interesting aspect of this plate is the intricate pattern on the surround which consists of tiny foliate and moss-like webbing onto which are superimposed medallions showing scenes. They are small and jeweled, giving them the appearance of gems. The central scene has the typical romantic elements - peaceful river, classic building, framing elm, and two figures at water's edge.

Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restorations. We have several matching plates. If you want to buy more than one, please email us so we can tell you how many we have on hand.

4009
Cranberry Transferware Plate, GRECIAN SCENERY, C. 1820 Presented is a lovely 9 inch plate with vivid and unique coloring. We have listed this in the purple transferware category for lack of a better term. The color is actually half way between purple and red. It is cranberry against stark white - gorgeous and rarely found.

The pattern is Grecian Scenery. It is well-known to collectors of early transfer designs; however, the potter has yet to be identified. It bears a cartouch with pattern name and the term, "Stone China," which was found on many early designs. The rim is irregularly scalloped.

The design features three figures beside classic ruins. A gondola-like boat appears in the river behind them. The surround has scenic and floral areas. A band of cranberry lines the edge.

It is in great condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations. Glaze is quite shiny. Upon close inspection, one can find a star line in the glaze which doesn't go through. We needed magnification to find it.
