FEATHER EDGE WARE

Photograph
Staffordshire Creamware Blue Feather ...

Picture

Feather Edge Ware, also known as Shell Edge Ware, was used in the housholds of all classes for everyday use. It was made mainly in the Staffordshire and Leeds areas of England and exported to many areas of the world. The United States was the main importer. It was made with salt glaze stoneware, whiteware, pearlware, creamware and ironstone bodies. The older pieces have incised designs on the edge. It is dated by its earthenware body, and the characteristics of the edge. Most pieces were made with blue coloration on the edge. One can also find pieces in other colors, particularly green and red.

Staffordshire Creamware Feather Edge Large Washing Basin Bowl Here is a large Staffordshire creamware blue feather edged basin. Usually these large water basins or bowls were damaged because of their daily use. We are happy to offer one in excellent condition. It measures 12 inches wide by 3 inches tall.

The rim has dimensional beading with blue color along the rim and in the crannies of the beading. Featheredge ware or shell edge ware, as it is also called, most typically has incised lines. This one is therefore somewhat unique because of the dimensional beading. It is unmarked except for an imprinted number 11. This is a designation of its size.

This early bowl dates to the late 1700s or early 1800s. It is in fine condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations. There is minimal wear to the blue edge and a bit of underglaze black soot-like bits at one point on the exterior of the edge. See the close-up. This is a product of the firing process and is not damage.
