TRANSFERWARE, BLACK

Picture

Designs in black transfer are particularly striking. The black is usually quite dark against a white ground. Designs were done in black both during the Romantic and Aesthetic periods.

1200047

Staffordshire Polychrome Syrup Pitcher, Putti Motif Here is a tall Staffordshire syrup pitcher, 8 1/2 inches. It once had an attached pewter lid - no longer.

The design, done in black transfer, has yellow lustre and dark red embellishments on the putti who are engaged in play - eating grapes, playing with a bird and ring, operating a bow and arrow - cupid style, and handing out together with a dove.

There is a little glazed-over crack at the top of the piece and some loss of the red enamel.

The design is quite whimsical and fun. This pitcher is unmarked. We date it by its look, feel, and subject matter.

9120

Aesthetic Black Transferware Staffordshire Plate, Star Pattern in Purple, Black, Yellow Lustre Here is a great black transfer aesthetic plate in a star pattern. It measures 10 1/2 inches wide and is made of heavy ironstone with crazing that actually adds to the design rather than detracting from it.

The artist who added purple embellishments and yellow lustre to this black transfer design was quite skilled and extremely patient as judged by the accuracy of the additions. It is quite beautiful.

This plate bears the number of the artist plus some imprinted markings, one of which is a 1 over 64, which probably indicates that it was made during January of 1864.

Though it is transfered in black, its look emphasizes the purple. It would look great as part of a purple transferware collection. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, or stains.
