Adams Black Transferware Plate, PALES...

Picture

Designs in black transfer are particularly striking. The black is usually quite dark against a white ground. Designs were done in black both during the Romantic and Aesthetic periods.

Aesthetic Black Transferware Staffordshire Plate, Star Pattern in Purple, Black, Yellow Lustre Here is a great black transfer aesthetic plate in a star pattern. It measures 10 1/2 inches wide and is made of heavy ironstone with crazing that actually adds to the design rather than detracting from it.

The artist who added purple embellishments and yellow lustre to this black transfer design was quite skilled and extremely patient as judged by the accuracy of the additions. It is quite beautiful.

This plate bears the number of the artist plus some imprinted markings, one of which is a 1 over 64, which probably indicates that it was made during January of 1864.

Though it is transfered in black, its look emphasizes the purple. It would look great as part of a purple transferware collection. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, or stains.

6082
Adams Pottery Staffordshire Black Transferware Plate, TEMPLE WARRIORS This large and lovely black transfer plate was made in the Adams pottery during the 1820 - 30 period. The pattern, which was never named, has come to be known as Temple Warriors. All scenes feature guards in native dress before a stylized temple-like building. In this scene, the guards seem to be checking the brush using a rather lethal looking spear.

The surround is scalloped, bordered in white and dimensionally beaded - gorgeous! The earthenware body is thin and light - soft paste in character.

It is in good condition with one little chip or flake in the white border as pictured. The inner ridge shows a bit of wear as well.

Given the two flaws, the plate has been priced accordingly.

Clews American Historical Brown Transferware Plate, Fishkill, Hudson River, c. 1815 Here is a large black transferware plate measuring 10 1/2 inches wide. The plate was made in the Clews pottery, c, 1815 -34, and bears its imprinted circular mark as well as the transferware backstamp of the pattern title.

The scene is one of many in the Picturesque Views series. This one depicts the Hudson River Near Fishkill.

Linear perspective is an important aspect of the scene. The viewer sees the scene as if standing on the road looking toward the curve ahead where two figures stand on the banks of the Hudson. The plate bears the parrot border that is well-known for this series. The rim is both bordered and dimensionally beaded - beautiful!

It is in very good antique condition, with one shallow chip on the back of the edge as pictured and no cracks, hairlines, stains, other chips or restoration. Also on the back side near the foot ring, one can find some underglaze frit, a product of the early potting and not damage.

10105
Jacksons Staffordshire Black Transferware Plate, CLYDE SCENERY, c. 1831 This early black transfer Staffordshire plate was made in the pottery of Job and John Jackson, c. 1831. The central scene is framed by two concentric bands. The designs close to the well are of flowers in black on a white ground. On the outside, scenes of sailboats on the River Clyde alternate with floral and scroll sections. The center shows several swans on the river in front of a triple-arched bridge. The edge is bordered in white and slightly scalloped.

The plate measures 9 inches wide. It looks great but has two flaws, a slight ding to the white edge, hard to find and shown in close-up, and a hairline in the well visible on the back but very hard to find on the front because of the patterning. There is also a small chip to the foot ring on the back side.

Because the flaws are hard to find, this beautiful plate makes an excellent display.
