Mayer Two Color Transferware Platter,...

Two and three-color Staffordshire transferware was done in multiple stages, one transfer operation for each color. The person doing the hand work needed to take care to apply the second stage transfer very carefully to align with the original design. Workers who did this work were usually illiterate women and children.

Rare Davenport Three Color Transferware Plate, MULETEER We are pleased to offer a rare tri-color transferware large plate in the Muleteer pattern. It was made in the Staffordshire pottery of Davenport and dates to 1836.

One seldom finds transfer designs in three colors. Usually, added coloration is done by hand-painting or clobbering. This is not clobbered. The colors are all done by transfer. One can see this by viewing the close-up pictures. Note the dotting.

The main transfer color is blue, which is used for the surround as well as for the water and mountains in the scene. The land and figures are done in black transfer. Green is used for the trees, grass, and other foliates.

This distinctive plate is quite large, measuring 10 1/4 inches wide and is in excellent condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations.
It bears the pottery's transfer backstamp and imprinted anchor mark.

The Muleteer design features a figure leading a pack mule down a path beside a waterfall. Behind are mountains and buildings with high towers. The surround has foliates, birds in flight and flowers on a stippled ground.

This plate was made in the pottery of George Wooliscroft. It dates to 1851 - 64. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restorations.

Wm. Ridgway Rare Bi-Color Pink & Brown Transferware Plate, ETRUSCAN FESTOON Here is a two-color transferware Staffordshire plate from the William Ridgway and Co. pottery. It dates to 1835. We love these colors! It is transfer printed in pink and black. It is a floral pattern plate with white floral images against the pink stippled ground with festoons in black connecting with flowers. The rim is elaborately scalloped, bordered and beaded in black.

It measures 9 1/4 inches wide. Condition is very good. There is one flaw on the back side, a small chip to the foot ring as pictured. It is marked with pattern name and pottery initials within an elaborate vase backstamp.

Two Color Transferware Staffordshire 9" Plate. Charles James Mason & Co., 1845-8, Blue & Black I can't gush enough about the beauty of this plate. The pattern, Basket, consists of a central floral basket in black transfer against white. It is framed within a circle of blue scrolling followed by a lavish band of blue stippling with bleck and white flowers. Toward the rim is a band of black transfer along a dimensionally beaded rim which is also bordered in white. Adding yet another dimension is the sculptured design of the rim. Wow!

It measure 9 inches in diameter unless one measures point to point on the rim decoration. Then, it measures 9 1/2 inches wide. It is in great shape, free of chips and cracks. The glaze is entirely shiny. Upon very close examination of the back side, one can see a small tick to the edge which does not show from the front.

This plate bears a transferware stamp from its potter, Charles James Mason & Co., whose pottery operated from 1845 to 1848. I believe, however, that a mistake was made by the person who transfered the design. It is marked "Persian" when the pattern is actually "Basket." Those doing the transfering were usually illiterate women and children, so one can understand how this might happen. I have four of these beauties. Each will be listed separately because each needs its condition to be described.

It measure 9 inches in diameter unless one measures point to point on the rim decoration. Then, it measures 9 1/2 inches wide.

The only condition issues to mention is a little bit of rubbing to the very tips of three of the edge points, mentioned for accuracy. There are also two chips to the underside foot ring, which would only be seen if the plate was upended.

For some reason, this plate is hard to photograph well. For this one, I took the pictures outside by natural light. I want the viewer to be able to see the detail.
