SPATTERWARE. LUSTERWARE, SPONGEWARE, SPRIG, & OTHER HAND - PAINTED STAFFORDSHIRE

Picture

Hand decoration of china dates back hundreds of years. Prior to the development of the transfer process, it was the only way dinnerware could be decorated. Hand painting of china later became popular as an avocation of well-to-do English ladies. The practice spread to the country women when they learned that they could make money by producing hand-painted wares. We offer several types of Staffordshire hand-painted porcelain, soft paste and ironstone - lustreware, sprigware, occasional gaudy Dutch and gaudy Welsh designs and lovely floral designs from the garden and the field.

540

Gaudy / Imari Type Fluted Bowl This is a rather unusual Staffordshire bowl which we found in England recently. The transferware pattern is a composition of fans, flower vines, and geometric medallions - aesthetic in nature. It is unusual to find such a transferware design with imari type hand painted accents in cobalt blue, salmon, pink, and orange-red, with a tiny bit of overglaze gold. The dramatically fluted shape is most unusual and attractive. It measures 8" wide by just shy of 2" tall. Though unmarked except for its artist's number, it looks like the work of either Mason, Ashworth, or Charles Meigh. Condition is excellent. It has no flaws.

2020

Early English Ironstone Plate, Hand Painted Floral Design Offered in this auction is an early ironstone Staffordshire plate with bordering and paneling on the surround. It has been skillfully painted in light green, red, blue and black. The stems and foliates in black add vividness to this great oak leaf type pattern. One sometimes spongeware elements on plates with hand-painted floral patterns; however, this one is done in brushstroke painting entirely. This pattern is usually referred to as Virginia. Since, however, many firms made such wares, the hand painting varies. In this rendition, the flowers are blue. Usually the image done here is blue is red while the red on this plate is usually done as a green foliate.

The plate measures 9 3/4 inches wide. Condition is excellent. There are no chips or cracks, and almost no scratching. The design has lost none of its vividness or enamel - a super example of mid-nineteenth century hand-painted Staffordshire at its best!!

10005

Early Gothic Octagonal White Ironstone Platter, Green Dotted Additions This double-bordered white ironstone platter has everted ribs. This gothic shape was made during the 1840's in the W. Adams and Sons pottery as well as in these: E. Challinor & Co., J.Heath, T. Goodfellow, John May, and E. Walley. Since it is not marked, I cannot tell you which is the pottery, but it does date to the 1840's.

It measures 13 inches long and is just shy of 10 inches wide. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restorations. It bears only a dot pattern from the artist who decorated it on the underside.

Love the decoration! It consists of hand-painted enamel green dotted circles - so crisp and perfect. We have appreciated the way this early design has been incorporated into Martha Stewart decorating ideas over the years. This platter would look great in a country kitchen, a French cottage design, or as part of a Staffordshire collection.
