TRANSFERWARE, BLUE

Picture

In the Nineteenth Century, English designs were done by hand, predominantly by illiterate women and children. The designs were transferred from a metal plate to a tissue which was hand-applied to the earthenware body and then fired in a kiln. The transfer process was cost-efficient as compared to hand-painting, making dinnerware affordable to the masses. Earliest patterns mimic pottery designs from China. Mid-Nineteeth Century designs are Romantic in nature. The Aesthetic Period followed the the latter part of the century. Blue transfer was by far the most popular and hence the most prevalent.

1900020

Stevenson & Williams Dark Blue Transferware Saucer, Beehive & Vases, c. 1825 Presented is a lovely and early dark blue transfer deep sipping saucer measuring 5 1/2 inches wide by 1 inch deep. The center is very flat so the vase-and-flower image against a stippled ground displays beautifully. The surround has flowers and scrolls.

I am presenting one saucer here, but I have three in fine shape to sell. One bears a "Stone China" mark. This was a common backstamp on early wares. It does not specify a particular potter. I believe this is the produce of the Stevenson and Williams pottery; however, it might be another of the early potters. Each saucer bears an imprinted H. Each is finely potted with pearlware glaze evident.

I have a fourth saucer with a hairline which does not interfere with display. If someone buys all three of the saucers that are in excellent condition, I will throw in the fourth one free. The last image shows all of them together.

J. & W. Ridgway Dark Blue Transferware Pedestalled Bowl, INDIA TEMPLE, c. 1814-30 This distinctive dark blue transferware bowl measures 10 inches wide by 4 inches tall. Note the lovely embossed border in white and dark blue handles. The scene features Asian images - pagodas, junks, foliates and florals among other elements.

It has no chips or cracks. The blue handles may have had some work at some time. I say this because they feel a little different from the rest of the piece and evince a bit of blistering. It's still gorgeous, and because of my concern about possible restoration, I am pricing it right.

Large , Early, & Rare Staffordshire Blue Transferware Fruit Bowl, Classic Pattern This rare and lovely Staffordshire blue transfer fruit bowl measures 13 inches long by 5 inches tall. The pattern on the interior and exterior is that of moss-like foliates. In the center of the well is the image of a classic vase.

Note the three-lobed cut-out design on the sides and on the ruffled top. The handles on each side are nicely embossed.

One seldom finds an item as scarce as this in such excellent condition. It has one tiny flake on the underside of one handle, small and insignificant. See the picture.

This bowl dates to the 1815 - 25 period. In is marked with an imprint, "Imperial Stone." The imprint is very close to the edge of the piece. We believe the word "China" was therefore omitted from the imprint. Wares marked with the term, Imperial Stone China, are known to date to the 1815 - 25 period.

9026

Clews American Historical Blue Transferware Soup Plate, Hudson River Here is a gorgeous American historical Staffordshire flat rimmed soup plate. It measures a large 10 inches wide and is in good condition, free of chips. It has a colorless hairline on the surround which we show in a close-up. It also has a bit of rubbing on the inner ridge of the surround which we have also shown in close-up. Glaze is very shiny.

The scene is one of the pottery's Picturesque Views series and dates to 1813 - 1834. It depicts North Fishkill on the Hudson River.

What a carefully potted plate it is! The scene is very sharp and carefully applied to the plate. Linear perspective is an important element of the scene. The viewer sees the scene as if standing on the road. To the right, a cabin appears on a bluff. As the road ahead curves to the right out of sight, two figures appear on the banks of the river. Sunlight directs the eye from that point, to a point on the opposite bank. Mountains appear behind. The surround has the distinctive parrot and flower border of the series.

10102

Early Davenport Pearlware Blue Transfer Plate, HIGH BRIDGE, c. 1793 Here is a wonderful and early blue transferware Staffordshire plate. It was made in the Davenport pottery and dates to 1793 to 1810, a very old piece of transferware. Condition is beyond excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, restorations, or utensil scratching. Glaze is entirely shiny.

The well is completely flat, and the surround is raised, standing 1 1/4 inches. It might be a flat soup plate, or it might be a plate with a particularly high surround. At any rate, it would make a particularly dramatic presentation on a wall because of the dimensional aspect of the surround.

The subject matter involves three figures on a walled deck overlooking a river. A flat, high bridge spans it, connecting a an Oriental building on a high bluff with the other side. The surround has fabulous images which frame the scene grotto style. They include a waterfall, a bluff, fruit, flowers, and foliates.

It is marked with the Davenport imprint and the Davenport anchor.

Hackwood Dark Blue Transferware 6 1/2 Inch Plate, FALLS OF KILLARNEY Here is a 6 1/2 inch cobalt blue transferware plate from the Hackwood pottery. It dates to the early 1800s. The pattern has commonly been referred to as Falls of Killarney. The design, however, is not historic since in Killarney, no two rivers join into confluent falls according to my friends from the area.

It's a pretty design, though. With cattle grazing in the foreground, three figures, two women beneath a parasol on a man, look at the falls behind which two rivers join. On the far side of the river are hills and a village. The surround has foliate and flower designs.

Condition is very good. There is some wear to the inner ridge from use but no chips, cracks, hairlines, or stains. On the back, there is a restoration, formerly a chip. It can only be seen if the plate is turned over.

J. Ridgway Blue Transferware Staffordshire Plate, NAPIER, c. 1846 - 50 Presented is an impressive Staffordshire 9 inch blue transferware plate in a chinoiserie design entitled Napier. Two potteries produced this pattern, J&G Alcock and J. Ridgway during the 1846 - 50 period. This one was made in the Ridgway pottery.

It is in excellent condition, free of all flaws. Note is great rim design which consists of dramatic scalloping and geometric design bordering. When plates are displayed, unusual rim shapes add an interesting dimension.

The subject matter is also charming. It looks like the early Oriental interpretation of a children's play date. In the foreground a mother holds her child's hand as a servant shades both with a parasol. They stand at the bank of a river as the mother looks at another woman who approaches. The second woman holds her child's hand as a servant shades them with a parasol. They sit in a Chinese junk. Other aspects of the design are pagodas, a willow tree design, and more geometric patterning. Its backstamp includes pattern name and pottery initials.

The design is named for British Major General Sir Charles Napier who was the conqueror of Scinde a province in India.

Large Staffordshire Blue Transferware Plate, BOLOGNA, W. Adams & Sons, c. 1830 We love this romantic pattern, Bologna. Here is a large blue transfer plate, 10 1/2 inches in diameter. It was made in the William Adams and Sons pottery which operated from 1830 - 40.

Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration. Glaze is very shiny. It's a gorgeous plate, large enough to display prominently.

With transferware, the term romantic implies subject matter that is both exotic and fanciful. In addition to the usual meaning, the Bologna series adds aspects of romantic love. Each scene involves some aspect of courting. Here we see the arrival - or departure - of the couple. A gondola stands at the ready as figures converse.

The willow pattern was first produced in the late 1700's and has been produced ever since. This one, however, is not a reproduction but a genuine antique. Meaning has been read into the multiple elements of this design which include an arched bridge with three figures, the willow tree in the foreground, a Chinese junk and a pagoda. The design was never actually put together as is seen in classic patterning by the Chinese. These elements were, however, all taken from Chinese designs.

Turner Blue Transferware Platter THE VILLAGER Presented is a large indented and embossed blue transferware platter made in the Turner pottery. It measures 17 inches by 14.5 inches and dates to the early years of the Nineteenth Century.

Made of pearlware with a blue glaze where it pools, it is well printed in a medium to dark cobalt blue. The pattern is known as The Villager. Three of the Turner potteries could have made this design. The earliest pottings had the embossing around the rim, so this one is quite old, 1800 to 1803.

The central scene features a couple with their baby and their dog. They appear to be out for a walk. Behind is a rural home, river, and arched bridge. The surround has both floral decoration and embossed arches.

Condition is excellent. The glaze has remained shiny with absolutely no wear, just a normal mild crazing. The only flaw occurred prior to the original firing. There are a few nibbles on the back edge in one spot that were glaze over. These affect neither the integrity nor the beauty of the platter.

Our romantic Staffordshire blue and white china dates to the Nineteenth Century. We guarantee our antique transferware, ironstone, soft paste china, and creamware to be authentic antiques, accurately described.

Early Blue Transferware Pearlware Teapot, Shepherd and Sheep This beautiful early teapot measures 10 inches long and stand 6 inches tall. It is an early one, c. 1815, unmarked. The scene features a shepherd leaning against a tree trunk with lyre in hand. His sheep listen as he plays. The border features flowers and scrolls.

We had the tip of the spout restored because there were chippies, and a hairline that crossed the bottom and affected one side was also restored, both with perfect results. The only chip is a small one to the underside of the lid, the part that fits down into the teapot. See the picture.

Rare Pearlware Blue Transferware Coffee Pot, MOSQUE & CAMEL This item is a large, unmarked, and early pearlware coffeepot. The charming design features a mosque-like domed building at river's edge. Several figures kneel on the bank as they fish. To the left, another figure approaches with a camel trailing behind him. The top of the pot and the domed lid have bands of elaborate floral designs.

It is very finely potted. This early pot dates to the first part of the 1800s, probably 1800 - 1815. Note the circular opening on the inside of the spout. These coffeepots differ from teapot designs of the period which included sieves to strain tea leaves.

With domed lid in place, it measures 11 inches tall by 9 inches wide. The lid's steamhole vents through the finial - how nicely designed!

Condition is very good! The glaze has two little glops (see the picture). This is not damage but we note it for accuracy. There were two chips on the lid and one on the base which we had professionally restored with perfect results.

This coffeepot would make a fine addition to the collection of a person with discriminating tastes.

Staffordshire Blue Transferware VegetableTureen, VERONA The vegetable tureen presented measures 10 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall. It has a classic pattern entitled Verona. An image of a statue and classic vases appear in a formal garden setting. Bands of foliates frame the scene around the lid's rim. The same band appears on the exterior of the pedestaled base. The interior has a scene similar to thelid. It is surrouded by scenic reserves that are separated by foliates and scrolls.

Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration. The exact potter is unknown. It is marked only with pattern name. By its characteristics, we would date this one to the 1840 -60 period.
