BLUE TRANSFERWARE

Early Davenport Pearlware Blue Transf...
Large Staffordshire J. Meir Blue Tran...

Picture

In the Nineteenth Century, English designs were done by hand, predominantly by illiterate women and children. The designs were transferred from a metal plate to a tissue which was hand-applied to the earthenware body and then fired in a kiln. The transfer process was cost-efficient as compared to hand-painting, making dinnerware affordable to the masses. Earliest patterns mimic pottery designs from China. Mid-Nineteeth Century designs are Romantic in nature. The Aesthetic Period followed the the latter part of the century. Blue transfer was by far the most popular and hence the most prevalent.

Adams Blue Transferware Staffordshire Octagonal Compote, ISOLA BELLA, c. 1850 Here is a lovely octagonal blue transfer high compote measuring 11 1/2 inches wide by 5 inches tall. Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or restoration.

The romantic pattern features a mother and child in a garden setting. The sides have a moss-like pattern with superimposed stylized floral elements.

We love the octagonal shape of this vessel. The four wide panels have scenes on the side.

It is marked with the pattern name and pottery. Several of the Adams sons took over the pottery during most of the 19th century, so dating it by pottery name does little good. By its characteristics, this piece dates to the 1845 to 1855 period.

9026
Clews American Historical Blue Transferware Soup Plate, Hudson River Here is a gorgeous American historical Staffordshire flat rimmed soup plate. It measures a large 10 inches wide and is in good condition, free of chips. It has a colorless hairline on the surround which we show in a close-up. It also has a bit of rubbing on the inner ridge of the surround which we have also shown in close-up. Glaze is very shiny.

The scene is one of the pottery's Picturesque Views series and dates to 1813 - 1834. It depicts North Fishkill on the Hudson River.

What a carefully potted plate it is! The scene is very sharp and carefully applied to the plate. Linear perspective is an important element of the scene. The viewer sees the scene as if standing on the road. To the right, a cabin appears on a bluff. As the road ahead curves to the right out of sight, two figures appear on the banks of the river. Sunlight directs the eye from that point, to a point on the opposite bank. Mountains appear behind. The surround has the distinctive parrot and flower border of the series.

Stevenson Prized Blue Transferware Plate, Millenium, c. 1810 - 35

Here is a plate in a pattern that is treasured by many, Millenium. The name, a misspelling of Millennium, signifies the biblical prophesy of the thousand-year reign of peace and prosperity. The design includes a bible opened to the prophesy, Isaiah, Chapter XIV.

The images include the all-seeing eye of God at the top surrounded by fruit and flowers - images a plenty. A prominent zigzag pattern separates the surround from the well. There, the central image is that of a child who is yoking a lion. The peaceful scene includes a resting lamb, goat, panther, cow and fox. At the bottom is a figure in prayer along with the words, "Give us this day our daily bread."

It measures 9 inches wide and is in excellent condition, free of chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, and restorations. It was made in the pottery of Ralph Stevenson which operated from 1810 to 1835.

10102
Early Davenport Pearlware Blue Transfer Plate, HIGH BRIDGE, c. 1793 Here is a wonderful and early blue transferware Staffordshire plate. It was made in the Davenport pottery and dates to 1793 to 1810, a very old piece of transferware. Condition is beyond excellent - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, restorations, or utensil scratching. Glaze is entirely shiny.

The well is completely flat, and the surround is raised, standing 1 1/4 inches. It might be a flat soup plate, or it might be a plate with a particularly high surround. At any rate, it would make a particularly dramatic presentation on a wall because of the dimensional aspect of the surround.

The subject matter involves three figures on a walled deck overlooking a river. A flat, high bridge spans it, connecting a an Oriental building on a high bluff with the other side. The surround has fabulous images which frame the scene grotto style. They include a waterfall, a bluff, fruit, flowers, and foliates.

It is marked with the Davenport imprint and the Davenport anchor.
